Essex came to us with the intent of getting a rebranding of their existing product line of cologne and perfume. Our job was to update their logo and feel of their brand to a new modern look. In the end, they wanted to see their brand put onto an actual product, so we mocked up their perfume line for them. Essex has been one of the easiest clients to work with because of their sheer openness to our ideas and liked almost everything we did. In the end they actually asked us what logo and typeface we thought was best and then went with our choice. Although I do feel ablidged that we got to actually make the call on what was fine, it isn’t our brand, but we are glad to help whenever we can!

___________________________________________________________________________

The Designer Grid (thedesignergrid.com) is a project that we undertook after many of our fellow designers didn’t have a place to showcase their work. To solve the problem of said people not having a website or an online portfolio, we thought that it would be a good idea to showcase their work along side their contact information in a graphically pleasing manner to the public. From this idea spawned the website we are working on today.

.

Questions and Answers for Pre-Launch

___________________________________________________________________________

The site’s intentions are not to make money although we do need to somehow come up with some type of revenue scheme to offset the costs of private hosting, for this we have setup an ad server that will hopefully pull in some money to help the cause. Currently the design of the website is finalized and we are under way with coding, the site is set to launch within the month. Most of the anticipation is coming from our own personal friend circle however we hope that within the coming months that the reach of the site will extend further than just our immediate friends and hopefully it will traverse the Internet’s designers. The goal of this project is to generate a user-driven design showcase that has more than just web design. In essence the idea is similar to a CSS showcase however instead of limiting the site’s material to only web based designs, The Designer Grid will showcase all genres of work from web design to advertisement to package design to 3D to writing! By the time the site begins to snowball (looking to the future) we hope that we have a following that will help us generate a nice flow of designer art.

.

The Big Problem

___________________________________________________________________________

Our biggest problem right now is the debate of discriminating work. We want to showcase quality work, or work that we consider quality; this is where the argument gets muddy because quality of work is totally our self-opinion. We are going to try our hardest to stop this from getting in our way of submissions, however there will be some personal criticism and rejection to some art, especially those that engage in semi-pornographic characteristics. In the end though, we hope that the majority of the visitors to the site agree with our decisions.

In addition to the branding we did for Paid 2 Play Media, we also designed their website. Paid 2 Paid came looking for a edgy and modern design which was to appeal to their specific nightclub-going demographic. They told they wanted the website to function as a hub for all nightlife events in the Los Angeles area as well as some connecting regions. Our challenge in this project was to create a website which gave users a place to search for an event for any particular night and be able to contact Paid 2 Play for reservations or to gain access to guest-only specific events. This was accomplished through a modern yet easy to navigate layout which displayed all current events. The home page makes browsing events quick and painless with more information about any particular event with a click of the mouse.

This design was a part of a theory project, the theory being that a design can only be a successful design if it is capable of equal expression in any color. Our specific project was to create an identity banner pattern which was as able to articulate itself in black and white as much as it was in any hue. We were able to simply achieve this by creating a repeating patter, similar to a plaid material, which was not necessarily made of different colors but rather different variations of the same color thus causing any change in hue to not hamper the design’s effectiveness.
